Pierre-Auguste Renoir (February 25, 1841–December 3, 1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. His work is characterized by a richness of feeling and a warmth of response to the world and to the people in it. As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition."
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France. When he was a boy, he worked in a ceramic factory where his drawing talents led to him being chosen to paint designs on fine china.
In 1862, he began studying art in Paris. There he met Claude Monet who became his close friend. Although Renoir exhibited paintings in 1864, recognition did not come for another 10 years due.
After many struggles in the beginning of his life, in the mid-1870s, he experienced his first acclaim when his work hung in the first impressionist exhibition of 1874.
In 1881 he traveled to Algeria, then to Madrid, Spain to see the well-known work of Diego Velázquez, also to Italy to see Titian's masterpieces in Florence, and the paintings of Raphael in Rome.
However, after 1890, he changed direction again that he returned to the use of thinly brushed color which dissolved outlines as in his earlier work. From this period onward he concentrated especially on monumental nudes and domestic scenes.
